Trucking Freight

Putting your cargo on wheels

Trucking freight (also known as motor trucking freight or freight cartage trucking) basically entails moving cargo from one location to another via a large truck, as opposed to air freight shipping, boat or any other means of transportation. While most freight companies offer services for all modes of delivery, there are those who specialize specifically in ground travel on a domestic or continental level only.

If you’re looking at trucking freight companies, the best ones will cover the following areas:

TL Freight

Truckload freight, or TL freight as it is commonly known, is used for shipping large items – which typically entails anything over 10,000 pounds. This could include one particularly large item or multiple smaller items, so long as they are all heading to one destination.

Pros and Cons: Since all your items are heading to one area, you will reduce the risk of damage caused by transferring or handling. Also, many TL companies offer per-mile pricing, which in these kinds of large loads can cost you less than paying by pound. However, the cost of TL freight services can be high.

LTL Freight

LTL, or “less than truckload” freight is used to ship loads that are too big to be shipped in package form but are too small to fill an entire truckload on their own. Instead, your shipment will join a number of others en route, and will pass from trucks and freight centers until it reaches the delivery location.

Pros and Cons: LTL freight shipping is a money-saver because you aren’t paying for a large truck you cannot fill. The downside is that your cargo is transferred more frequently and passes through other locations, so it is more susceptible to damage and may take longer to arrive.

Expedited Freight

Expedited freight is for when you need to get your cargo to its delivery location in a hurry. While most often done by air, short-distance expedited freight services can be handled by truck or van. You’ll want to ensure any freight company you choose is equipped to handle the distance you need to travel by your desired deadline.

Pros and Cons: Delivery deadlines are crucial, so getting your goods out on time is a must for customer satisfaction. But be prepared to pay for this luxury – it’s not one you’ll want to be using frequently.

Discount Freight

Regardless of the service, everyone wants to get the best possible value out of their dollar – and shipping fees are no different. Many freight shipping companies will offer you discounts for regular use, large shipments or even client referrals, but just be sure you’re not sacrificing quality for savings. Choose a reputable company who can handle your individual needs and give you the best possible experience for prices you can afford.

Which is Right for You?

If you’re not sure which shipping method is going to be suitable for your cargo, or you’d like to look further into the different services, contact a freight broker. They’ll offer you all the information you need, and get you started with the names of reputable freight trucking companies in your area.
